Mark Perry tries case to defense verdict for
Scranton cardiologist.
After
a seven day trial in May of 2007, a Lackawanna County
jury granted a defense verdict to a Scranton cardiologist.
The allegations against the physician at trial concerned
an alleged failure to diagnose and treat a retroperitoneal
hemorrhage, failure to order a CT scan, and failure
to timely consult a vascular surgeon.
The patient arrived at the hospital by ambulance having
suffered an acute myocardial infarction. He had a previous
history of a heart attack, and had undergone cardiac
catheterization and stenting of the distal right coronary
artery three months earlier. The Defendant cardiologist
ordered intravenous medications and several lab tests,
attempting to stabilize the patient’s vital signs.
While undergoing treatment at the tertiary care center,
the patient suffered a DVT and later expired.
With the assistance of cardiology and vascular surgery
experts retained by The Perry Law Firm, L.L.C., Mr.
Perry successfully established that retroperitoneal
hemorrhage is notoriously difficult to diagnose in patients
who have undergone percutaneous coronary interventions
such as cardiac catheterizations. Despite this, the
Defendant cardiologist was able to timely recognize,
diagnose and treat the retroperitoneal bleed, thus stabilizing
the patient. Eventually, the patient’s severe
and debilitating cardiac condition caused his death.
His severely damaged ventricular function prevented
him from recovering from the myocardial infarction that
brought him to the hospital, despite the best efforts
of his treating physicians.
