City
doctor wins malpractice case third time
By Ray Flanagan 11/15/2002
A
Scranton doctor was exonerated this week for the third
time of wrongdoing in his treatment of a woman who developed
a crippling nerve disorder after a fall in 1984.
Similar
verdicts in favor of Dr. Joseph Cronkey were returned
after trials in 1989 and 1994, but they were overturned
on appeals filed by attorneys for Linda and Steven Barletto,
Meshoppen.
Mrs.
Barletto, who uses a wheelchair, dislocated her foot
in the fall at a camp in Wyoming County on June 27,
1984. She was treated by Dr. Cronkey from then until
Aug. 2, 1984.
Later
in August 1984, she went to another doctor. She eventually
was diagnosed with a painful nerve condition that leads
to the loss of use of an affected limb.
The
woman, who was represented by attorneys Gerard Shrom
and Nicholas Casamente, maintained Dr. Cronkey should
have diagnosed the condition while she was under his
care.
Dr.
Cronkey, represented by attorney Mark Perry, and his
witnesses argued the condition did not become apparent
while he was treating Mrs. Barletto.
The
trial lasted five days before Judge Trish Corbett.
